Stress & Resilience

Part 3: Tuesday, February 5 | 2:00pm-3:30pm

Stress is your body’s way of responding to demands and/or threats whether real or imagined and can be both positive as well as negative. Stress can also accumulate over time and start to have a significant effect on health and wellbeing.  When stress outweighs our resources, we find ourselves in a state of collapse. Resilience is the capacity to recover quickly from stress. As a whole, resilience is a factor that can deflect the state of collapse and is a marker for wellness. Resilience is a skill that can be developed and cultivated over time. This training will focus on the mitigating factors that compound stress for students and ways to manage them. In this 3 part series we will learn about stress and resilience in depth. Each consecutive session will build on skills learned in the previous session so it is recommended that you attend all three if you can.

In part 3: Creating a Wellness Plan

Participants will

  • Review information learned about stress theory, accumulated stress and  physiological changes
  • Utilize their understanding of their personal ACES (Adverse Childhood Experiences Scale) score to understand how their body experiences stress
  • Develop a personalized wellness plan focusing on the dimensions of wellness that need to be developed further
  • Learn ways of incorporating wellness into daily and hourly activities to ensure effective stress coping and management and avoid accumulation of stress
  • Be able to identify ways to incorporate wellness as a lifestyle and value

Pre-requisites:

  • This is a high level workshop and attendees should have completed the EQ-I 2.0 assessment and thoroughly reviewed their information prior to attending the workshop
  • Participants should have identified at least 2-3 EI skills and 2-3 overall qualities they want to develop further prior to attending the workshop

This workshop is designed to expand on insights gained from your self-review of your results and your comprehensive feedback report. The focus will be on next steps for personal growth and development and practice of new behaviors. Challenges and difficulties faced will be objectively and compassionately addressed to promote growth. There are some pre-requisites for this workshop so please do take some time to review your feedback report in detail and come to the sessions prepared for maximum impact.

In Session 1 Participants will

  1. Work on ways to develop EI skills they have already identified as needing development
  2. Develop strategies around overall qualities they would like to nurture
  3. Identify barriers that get in the way of developing EI skills and strategies for growth
  4. Discover ways to work with the resistance to diffuse it and make progress
  5. Identify behaviors for practice

In Session 2 Participants will

  1. Discuss challenges they faced when practicing growth behaviors
  2. Identify subconscious secondary gains that are keeping them rooted in dysfunctional patterns
  3. Identify unresolved emotional content that keeps them trapped in patterns
  4. Develop a plan for unlocking potential through continued personal work
  5. Identify what stage of change they are in and next steps to move forward

 

Healthy Relationships Outside of Work & Academia*

Do you know what a healthy relationship is? Are you able to identify toxic patterns in your interactions? Do you find yourself attracted to people who are damaging to your wellbeing? Are you stuck in a dysfunctional family dynamic? Are you curious about how to take your good relationship to a deeper and more intimate level of satisfaction? How do you cultivate fulfilling relationships? If any of the above are of interest to you then this workshop is for you!

Participants will learn about

  1. The dynamics of a healthy relationship
  2. Healthy boundaries
  3. How to fight right
  4. Communication
  5. Needs priorities and negotiating for your needs effectively

 

Listening to Your Body

Monday, March 4 | 9:00am-11:00am

Do you know that emotions are felt as sensations in your body? Your body also keeps a score of everything it has felt. Imprints of your experiences are stored in muscular and physical structures. What experiences has your body been carrying? What is your body trying to tell you? Can you tell? Body awareness can be cultivated with practice and awareness. Join us to learn more! This is an exploratory workshop.

Participants will learn about

  1. Body memories and trauma
  2. Body sensations and identifying what they mean
  3. Ways to connect subconscious body movement with stress triggers
  4. Activities for continued body work in self-care, and stress management
  5. Therapies that incorporate body work

 

Mindfulness Meditation*

Monday, March 25 | 12:00pm-1:00pm

Have you ever driven your car somewhere and arrived at your destination only to realize you remember nothing about your journey? Or eaten a sandwich and suddenly it hit you that you don’t recall what it tasted like or what the textures were? Have you ever walked to class and did not register the trees, or scenery or smells or sounds of what you passed by? If you can relate to any of these, this workshop is a must attend for you. We spend most of our days out of sync with mindful practice. Come and learn about ways to incorporate 5 sense mindfulness and meditative practice into your everyday activities.

Participants will learn about stress reduction and wellbeing through

  1. 5 sense mindfulness
  2. Mindful eating
  3. Mindful movement through Gurdjieff movement practice
  4. Candle meditation
  5. Alternate nostril breathing
